Whenever I hear this composition by Christopher Tin, I immediately picture vast, sprawling cities, wars being fought on the battlefield, and astronauts exploring outer space. This is probably because I’m a big fan of Sid Meier’s Civilization games, the 4th of which is where this song first appeared.
The song is a Swahili version of the “The Lord’s Prayer” and for this version, I did my best to be close to the spirit of the original version, only this time without the orchestral and percussive parts. Just me and around 180+ layers of my vocals mixed together.
Fun Fact: This song won a Grammy Award, the first for video game music I believe.
Civilization 4 “Baba Yetu” Acapella
Performed by The String Player Gamer
Arranged by Diwa de Leon
Original music by Christopher Tin
Lyrics (Swahili version of The Lord’s Prayer)
Baba yetu, yetu uliye
Mbinguni yetu, yetu amina!
Baba yetu yetu uliye
M jina lako e litukuzwe.
Utupe leo chakula chetu
Makosa yetu, hey!
Kama nasi tunavyowasamehe
Katika majaribu, lakini
Utuokoe, na yule, muovu e milele!
Ufalme wako ufike utakalo
Lifanyike duniani kama mbinguni.
